Yatsenyuk: Ukraine will host the first winter without Russian gas

Ukraine will be able to complete the current heating season without purchasing Russian gas, stated Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk on the government meeting with representatives of the diplomatic corps in Kyiv on Friday, reports «Interfax-Ukraine».

«I would like to announce: for the first time in the history of Ukraine we get through the winter without Russian gas», – said the head of government, stressing that this was possible thanks to the reform of the NJSC «Naftogaz of Ukraine».

«This is a real reform and a real step to ensure that Ukraine diversified its natural gas supply», – said Yatsenyuk.

He thanked the EU, the EBRD, the world Bank and other international partners for assistance in enabling Ukraine to achieve «real diversification and energy independence.»

That the Russian gas do not have to purchase and in the following winter, said recently the Minister of energy and coal industry Volodymyr demchyshyn.

As reported, Ukraine in 2015, reduced imports of natural gas 15.9% (3.1 billion cubic meters) compared to 2014 year – on-year to 16.4 billion cubic meters.

Imports of gas from Russia in 2015 amounted to 6.1 billion cubic meters, which is 2.4 times less than at the end of 2014 (14.5 billion cubic meters).

«Russia thought that will put us on our knees, offered gas at 212 (dollars per thousand cubic meters, while gas from the EU is less than 200 — ed.). I have instructed the Minister’s calling to Russia, says: «No, your gas, we will not take» — said in late January the President Petro Poroshenko.

According to him, Ukraine buys gas in Europe, which cost cheaper than the Russian.

«Today we experienced the first winter without Russian gas», — he added.

The purchase of Russian gas completely stopped the end of November 2015.

Now Ukraine buys European «blue fuel» at the price of 190 U.S. dollars per cubic meter.
