Activities of the special representative of the US State Department in Ukraine, Kurt Volker, will be supported by resources not only of the state Department, but, most likely, other American agencies. This opinion in comments to the edition «GORDON» was expressed by the Ukrainian diplomat, former Consul General of Ukraine in Istanbul, the head of the charity Fund «Maidan zakordonnih Ref» Bohdan Yaremenko.
«It is possible that some of the views he already has. But when the position of special envoy Volker on Ukraine will be finally approved, I sympathize with our diplomats. Then their opinions, nobody will ask. It all depends on what Walker will come up. Behind him will stand the resources of the US state Department and probably other American agencies. That is, when he takes a certain decision and it is approved in Washington, resources will not be spent to convince the Ukrainian side, and on the implementation of specific steps. And, if necessary, the Americans will break through the knee. So our diplomats need to be more active,» – said the diplomat.
According to him, the President of the United States Donald trump is interested in the fact that Walker has achieved good results in the new position.
«Walker – professional. He has always held positions where rest will not work – constantly need to work and be very active. In particular, this applies to the post of U.S. Ambassador to NATO. As we see, for trump, it is very important to achieve any results in the «Russian» direction. That is professional quality Volker and political problems of the administration of the President of the United States coincided. Of course, Volker will take some time probing the situation. But he just will not sit in Washington and read the newspaper. It will actively travel to Ukraine,» – said Yaremenko.
7 July it became known that U.S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson was appointed Volker to be the U.S. special representative in negotiations on the situation in Ukraine.
July 10, Walker met with former President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma, representing Kiev at the talks in the tripartite contact group. They agreed that the unit of the Minsk agreements on security is key to resolving the situation in the Donbass.
July 13, the Deputy head of the presidential administration of Ukraine Konstantin Eliseev said that in the coming days, Walker will again visit Ukraine.
Walker worked as an analyst in the CIA in 1986-1988. Then moved to the foreign division of the state Department. In the late 1990s, became the first Secretary of the U.S. mission to NATO, and in 1999 – Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the Alliance.
He held various positions in the national security Council, and in 2008 was appointed U.S. Ambassador to NATO. This position he left in 2009. In 2011 he joined the Washington lobbying firm BGR Group.
