The EU Ambassador in Russia Vygaudas Usackas, who is completing his work in Moscow, in interview to TV channel «Rain» said, in January 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin asked him about the hostile attitude of the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite.
He said the conversation took place in the Elevator after the negotiations at the EU summit – Russia. It also drove the then President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and a handful of guards.
«It seemed to me that the lift didn’t go 40 seconds and probably 40 minutes. Because these negotiations have been very tough and difficult was. And it is clear that sympathy was not mutual. And suddenly, the President turns to me and says: «Well what it is to me all the time drives?» – said Usackas.
The Ambassador added that he does not know who the President says. Putin said that asking about grybauskaitė.
«I told him: «Listen, as you do not drive, if you then threaten Ukraine, threaten Lithuania has already introduced sanctions against the Lithuanian exports of agricultural products. Of course, we have to say to that, what else can we do?» – said the Ambassador.
Usackas served as Minister of foreign Affairs of Lithuania since December 2008 to February 2010. 10 Sep 2013 he held the position of head of the EU delegation to Russia.
Lithuania is one of the most adamant allies of Ukraine. Grybauskaite has repeatedly spoken out against the easing of sanctions against Russia and has called for the strengthening of restrictive measures.
4 September 2017 Grybauskaite said that from the very first meeting with Putin «received a list of requirements that must fulfill Lithuania». She noted that it «was not an offer to make friends or cooperate.» «Either you kneel down and perform or you are the enemy», – said the President and added that «he could not accept such relations.» In the Kremlin, her words denied.
