Thursday, February 9, the Council of Warsaw, voted to provide the name of Vasyl Stus square in the centre of the capital of Poland. It is reported Prostir with reference to information of the city Council.
The square, named after the famous Ukrainian poet, is located at the intersection of Independence Avenue and the streets of the Stefan Batory Foundation. Its decision, the Council justifies the fact that Vasyl Stus was a «Ukrainian poet and opposition figure» as well as «polonofil and representative of the Polish-Ukrainian unification.»
The decision of the Council must now carry out the mayor of Warsaw Anna Gronkiewicz-waltz. The decision will enter into force 14 days after its publication in the official government publication of the Mazovian Voivodeship.
The publication notes that the near future of the Park of Vasyl Stus is the national library of Poland and the largest economic University in the country – the Main trade school (SGH).
«Renaming the Park will cost Warsaw 8650 PLN (2 thousand euros), most of this amount – the cost of fabrication and installation tables with the name of the square», – said Prostir.
Poet, writer, translator and human rights activist was born on 6 January 1938. Stus became a symbol of Ukrainian Resistance in the second half of the twentieth century. The role of Stus in the development of Ukrainian literature of the twentieth century, the restoration of Ukrainian statehood and the national idea is difficult to overestimate.
For his human rights activities, and in particular, speaking out about the repression against the Ukrainian intelligentsia in September 1980, the poet was sentenced to ten years imprisonment and five years exile. He was serving a sentence in a special regime camp VS-389/36 pp. Kuchino Chusovskoy district of Perm region.
1982 the poet spent in solitary confinement. During 1980-1985, he wrote the last collection of his poems, «Ptah DOS» («Bird of the soul»). The manuscript of the book back from the archives and the Affairs of the KGB-MVD fails so far.
Vasyl Stus died in the night from 3 to 4 September 1985 in the Shu camp.
The famous German writer, Nobel laureate Heinrich Boll for the book «Palimpsests» Stus was nominated for the Nobel prize.
In 1991, for a collection of selected poems «the Road of pain» Vasily Stus was awarded the State prize of Ukraine them. Taras Shevchenko (posthumously).
In its short life of Vasyl Stus, poet and human rights activist, member of the Ukrainian Helsinki group — left 6 volumes of the works, most of which have been translated into English and published in the West.
