US intelligence fears of threats from Russia in the cyberspace, the arms race, space and the Arctic

The U.S. government has entered the field and areas of interest, where Washington feels a possible threat from Russia. In particular, we are talking about cyberspace, the breaches of the Treaty of missiles short and medium range, rivalry in space and regional conflicts. This is stated in the report of the Director of national intelligence of the USA James Klapper, which he presented to Congress as a report on global security threats, writes NEWSru.com.

Iran still poses a threat to Washington, despite nuclear deal

Russia in the report is mentioned in the analysis of the seven main threats. The first two of these relate to the protection of cyberspace. According to American intelligence, Russia has the ability to conduct network reconnaissance operations to defeat critical infrastructure, collecting information, conducting «operations impact». Moscow and Beijing, said Klepper, considering the effects on cyberspace as an important geo-strategic tools and will continue to develop them, thus they will be discussing ways to limit such impacts.

In addition, through cyberspace Russia seeks to influence people’s opinions — in order to change the direction of discussions on important issues and to support their supporters, said Klepper. In particular, in his report stated that Moscow places on commercial sites with disinformation for the purpose of influencing online media to change the discourse and the intentional creation of confusion.

The third item on Clapper called Russia’s violation of the Treaty of missiles short and medium range. The head of the U.S. intelligence community notes that Russia denies violation of this agreement.

In addition, the document notes that Russia and China continue to improve the capabilities of their military and intelligence satellites. And their operations are becoming increasingly «sophisticated», says the report, but as examples of Russian space images used to support military operations in Syria. Moreover, Beijing and Moscow, emphasizes Klepper, actively develop space weapons, which may in coming years become a threat to military, civil and commercial space systems USA.

Clapper referred to the Russian military, which, he said, admitted the existence and deployment of «jamming» of the signals from the satellites, and the development of laser weapons for the purpose of «blinding» U.S. reconnaissance satellites and spacecraft.

The report names and actions of «traditional» intelligence services of other countries, in the first place by hazard observed actions of intelligence services of Russia and China. Separately in the document there is a speech about activity of Russia in the Arctic, where she «will continue to maintain a military presence along the Northern coastline» in order to defend the border and to ensure control over its «exclusive economic zone».

Extensive the last paragraph, in which Russia is mentioned as a threat on regional conflicts where Moscow was in touch with what is happening in Ukraine, in Syria and Turkey, as well as Russian policy towards the neighboring countries.

«Despite the economic slowdown in Russia, — emphasized in the exploration, the Kremlin intends to continue to pursue a tough foreign policy in 2016».

«Russia’s willingness to secretly use military and paramilitary forces in the neighboring country continues to be alarming in the countries around Russia, including members of NATO,» according to U.S. intelligence.

«With the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis in 2014, Moscow has redoubled its efforts to strengthen its influence in Eurasia,» reads the report, while Russia called «undisputed hegemon» in Eurasia, and she said Clapper will tend to increase the pressure on neighboring countries to engage in the Eurasian economic Union.

There is also a concern of Turkey in connection with the desire of Russia to help the Kurds and to exert more influence in the region. Military participation of Russia in Syria is likely to help the regime of Bashar al-Assad to regain control over «key» areas, such as Aleppo, but «foreign aid» the Assad government will not be able to fundamentally change the balance of power and their position, the report said.

Earlier, U.S. President Barack Obama has officially announced the allocation of 3.4 billion dollars to support allies in the Organization North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) due to the Russian aggression in Eastern Europe.

Iran still poses a threat to Washington, despite nuclear deal

The document also States that Iran «poses a long lasting threat to the national interests of the United States in connection with the support of regional terrorist and armed groups, as well as Assad’s regime» and the strengthening of its military potential.

From the point of view of American intelligence agencies, «Tehran sees itself as heading the «axis of resistance», which includes the Assad regime and… related to the Iranian groups, first of all, Lebanese Hezbollah and Iraqi insurgents-Shiites».

«Their intention is to undermine the influence of the United States, Saudi Arabia and Israel, to support its allies and fight against the expansion of IG», — stated in the report of Klepper, which formally coordinates the activities of all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies.

According to U.S. intelligence, «Iran in 2015, more deeply immersed in the conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Yemen». Moreover, «Tehran has expanded its cooperation with Russia in the region», say the authors of the report.

In their view, the head and spiritual leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei «continues to consider the U.S. as a major threat» to their country.

«We believe that his views will not change, despite the fulfilment of SWPD,» said the U.S. intelligence.

As reported, world leaders agreed to cancel strict sanctions against Iran in exchange for Tehran’s compliance with its obligations to limit the development of nuclear weapons.

The European Union said that Iran is not removed all sanctions, but only economic and financial constraints associated with its nuclear program.
