UN: Aleppo could become a «giant cemetery»

The Syrian city of Aleppo risks becoming a «giant cemetery», if not urgently appropriate measures will be taken. This was stated by the Deputy UN Secretary-General for humanitarian Affairs Stephen O’brien , during a meeting of the UN security Council, reports Euronews.

«For the sake of humanity call upon the parties, and those who influence them, to do everything in their power to protect the civilian population and to provide access to the besieged areas of Eastern Aleppo. Otherwise, soon it will be one giant cemetery,» said O’brien.

He stressed that dozens of humanitarian workers trapped in Aleppo.

In turn, the leaders of the Syrian opposition are in talks with Russian officials about a possible cessation of hostilities in Aleppo, said on Thursday the Financial Times, citing unnamed representatives of the Syrian opposition.

«The focus in negotiations has been taken to end the conflict in Aleppo,» — said the publication source.

It is noted that the negotiations held in Ankara, under the mediation of Turkey.

The report States that the United States in the negotiations do not participate, and avoid them completely disabled.

Who is involved in the negotiations from Russia, the report did not specify.

Earlier it was reported that the Syrian army and its allies announced the seizure of large parts of Eastern Aleppo. The last offensive of government troops Assad threatens final destruction of the forces of the opposition in its most important Outpost.

The capture of Eastern Aleppo was the biggest victory for President Bashar al-Assad since the uprising began against him in 2011. Therefore, Assad has managed to fully regain control of Aleppo, except for the Kurdish areas that have not fought against the government.

Earlier, the UN special envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura said that the rebels controlled the Eastern part of the Syrian city of Aleppo could be destroyed by the end of December, if the bombing continues at its current level.

Note that while U.S. Secretary of state John Kerry is making «outrageous and extraordinary» diplomatic efforts to broker a deal with Russia on ending the siege of the Syrian city of Aleppo, son of Donald trump — Donald trump Jr. — met in October in Paris with representatives of the Syrian opposition, which recognize Assad and Russia. The trump recently said that he has some very serious ideas to resolve the situation in Syria. After the election, trump has twice talked with Putin by telephone on cooperation in the middle East.

East Aleppo is under rebel control since 2012, government forces carried out a determined attack with the support of Russian aircraft in the past 13 days.
