Ukrainian Antarctic station «Akademik Vernadsky», which was transferred to Ukraine in 1996, the British government, executed February 6, 20 years.
On the necessity of participation of our country in the Antarctic researches of domestic scientists said at a press conference on Friday, 5 February, reports «UKRINFORM».
«The first question which occurs is why should we the Antarctic. This is the storeroom for the future. There is a huge inventory of biological resources, minerals, oil and gas. She us this interesting», — said the Director of the National Antarctic scientific center of Ministry of education of Ukraine Valery Litvinov.
According to him, out of 197 countries-UN members, only 29 countries that conduct scientific research in Antarctica have the highest consultative status, and to have a voice and veto in the future the allocation of resources of the Antarctic. Since 1996 they were joined by Ukraine.
Now on station in Antarctica Ukraine conducts research in Geophysics, medicine, meteorology, biology.
In addition, scientific research conducted by Ukrainian scientists, allows not only to maintain the country’s prestige, but also can be used in mineral exploration, the global prediction of climate change and long term weather forecasting, in particular in the southern hemisphere, the development of biotechnology.
«20 years ago nobody heard of a biotechnology. And today, new strains of organisms are already used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetic industries. It turns out that the microorganisms in many aspects are very important. And it turns out that Antarctica is the source of such strains that can be studied, and to determine such biological substances that can be used», — said the doctor of biological Sciences, the participant of two Antarctic expeditions , Valery Polishchuk.
He noted that despite insufficient funding of Ukrainian studies, their results have a very high prestige in the world scientific community.
«Science is assessed primarily on the prestige of the publications. We’re referred to, and we have done very important work, regardless of funding, which is far from meeting even the minimum necessary», — said Polishchuk.
As stressed by the participants of the press conference, most of the funding for Antarctic expeditions is to ensure viability of the station, the purchase of fuel, equipment and freight vessel that provides delivery of expedition members and cargo to the station.
«The amount of funding that was provided on the implementation of the programme on Antarctic research, was increased nearly 49 million USD 46 million USD last year. Almost 90% of this budget is spent on the organization of the expedition, the logistics, the cost of which is estimated in foreign currency», — said the Director of Department scientifically-technical development of mon Dmitry Cheberkus.
According to him, this is 10% of the total budget of the MES. In addition, the Ministry also funds and space research programme. As noted by Habermas, these two lines of research will always be pasupati «all political turmoil».
We will remind, in March of 2013, Ukrainian scientists have discovered a new hydrocarbon province close to the station «Academician Vernadsky» in West Antarctica. «According to the results of geoelectric sounding in 2012 discovered and mapped four anomalies of the type «oil deposits». The total area of the anomalies is about 900 square km, which is also confirmed by satellite research», — stated in the message the government web portal.
In addition, Ukrainian researchers also found in West Antarctica anomalous zone type «gas hydrate deposits».
In may 2013 the foreign Ministers of member countries of the Arctic Council after a stormy discussion, adopted a historic decision to grant observer status to six new countries — China, India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Italy. Thus, now there are 12.
The Arctic Council is an international organization established in 1996. It includes the eight circumpolar States — the U.S., Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and six associations of indigenous peoples of the North.
Before the advent of six new permanent observers in this capacity was six other countries — Britain, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland and France. China, South Korea and Italy had a temporary observer status.
It is believed that Antarctica has huge resources. According to the statements of polar scientists, in the depths of the mainland are concentrated rich sources of oil, gas, precious metals, coal and charcoal. Prospected deposits of iron ore; found traces of ores of copper, Nickel, lead, zinc, molybdenum, rock crystal, mica, graphite. Recent geological surveys found on the White continent even uranium. It is also important that Antarctica is a repository of the main reserves of fresh water on Earth.
Mining and even exploration on the sixth continent is banned until the so-called Madrid Protocol, adopted in 1991. However, often such work is carried out under the guise of permitted scientific research, writes Neftegaz.ru.
It is not excluded that later, in connection with the possible shortage of various natural raw materials, established international rules may change. And to this we must be ready, say «arguments of the week», reminding that the US has already announced its plans to conduct test oil production on the icy continent in 2020.
In addition, the latest technologies give you the right to talk about the development of fields in Antarctica. On the icy continent became noticeably warmer. The bowels become more affordable.
«Academician Vernadsky» (1996 — «Faraday» (eng. Faraday Station)) is the only Ukrainian Antarctic station located at Cape Marina island Galindez 7 km from the Western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. The station operates all year round and is the geographical and meteorological Observatory. Founded in 1953 as a British station «Faraday»; in February 1996, was purchased by Ukraine for a symbolic price of one pound sterling in great Britain and renamed to «Akademik Vernadsky» in honor of the outstanding Ukrainian scientist, academician Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky, the first President of the NAS of Ukraine.
Research on the sixth continent is the main purpose of the Ukrainian Antarctic station «Akademik Vernadsky». To perform this task is subject to all the activity stations and National Antarctic scientific center.
The purpose of the State target scientific and technical program of research in Antarctica for 2011-2020 is to provide fundamental and applied scientific research in the Antarctic, the effective functioning of the Antarctic station «Academician Vernadsky», the implementation of Ukraine’s international obligations under the Antarctic Treaty and scientifically sound assessment of the prospects of development of biological and mineral-resource potential of the region.
