Ukraine intends to preserve and to uphold the status of the state — a key transit country for Russian gas to Europe, said President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko during a press conference with the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and the head of the Council of Europe Donald Tusk.
Poroshenko stressed that Ukraine fulfills its obligations and provides opportunities for transit of the fuel.
«We agreed that the visit of the Vice-President of the EC Maros Sefcovic in Moscow on 25 November will be devoted to preparing for tripartite consultations in the format EU — Ukraine — Russia on issues of Russian gas supplies. We reaffirm our position that Ukraine is a reliable partner of the EU in gas transit issues. We must continue to maintain a key role in the transportation of Russian gas to European consumers», — said Poroshenko.
He reminded that Ukraine considers inappropriate development of the gas pipeline projects Nord stream and OPAL, since it is a «politically motivated project».
Earlier, Ukraine and the EU signed a 10-year Memorandum of energy cooperation, the implementation of which will allow to synchronize the work of the Ukrainian and European power systems.
Natural gas transit through the Ukrainian gas transportation system (GTS) in January-October 2016 has increased by 20% compared to the same period last year to 65.3 billion cubic meters. m. However, under the transit contract between Ukraine and Russia, Gazprom shall annually pumped through the territory of Ukraine not less than 110 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The Russian side its part of the contract is not fulfilling.
Moreover, in November there was a threat of reducing the volume of gas transit through Ukraine in connection with the European Commission’s decision to allow the Russian gas monopoly «Gazprom» to use the additional capacity of the largest German gas pipeline OPAL, connecting the German transport capacity with another Russian gas pipeline «Nord stream». According to estimates of the state holding «Naftogaz of Ukraine», in the case of granting to Gazprom additional access to 30% of the capacity of OPAL gas transit through Ukraine will be reduced to 10-11 billion cubic meters of fuel per year, and transit revenues of Ukraine – 290-320 million dollars. USA under the old tariff. If «Gazprom» will get access to an additional 40% of the capacity of OPAL, transit losses of Ukraine will be 13.5-14.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, and transit revenues will be reduced by 395-425 million dollars.
