Ukraine will receive from US $250 million for the construction of the Chernobyl centralized repository for spent nuclear fuel

On 21 December, the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine and the state enterprise «national nuclear energy generating company «Energoatom» and the American Agency, «overseas private investment Corporation» and Central Storage Safety Project Trust has signed agreements on raising $250 million for the construction of centralized repository for spent nuclear fuel in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, the press service of the Ministry of Finance.

«The sides signed a number of agreements providing for the financing of the project for the design and construction of long-term centralized repository for spent nuclear fuel (facility) from three nuclear power plants (Rivne, Khmelnitsky and South Ukraine), on the designated area of the Chernobyl exclusion zone. In particular, the funds will be used for the supply of containers for storage and transportation of spent nuclear fuel and other equipment that will be provided by the American company Holtec International», – noted in the Ministry.

The Ministry of Finance announced that the overseas private investment Corporation will insure political risks for 20-year loan to $250 million, and Ukraine guarantees the performance of debt «Energoatom».

It is noted that construction of the facility will allow Ukraine to save $14-22 million a year by creating an alternative to services of Russia for storage and reprocessing of nuclear fuel. The project will create over 160 new jobs.

The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in April 1986 has become one of the largest industrial nuclear disasters in history. On the international nuclear event scale, adopted in 1988, the Chernobyl accident is one of the two, which is estimated at the maximum, the seventh level of danger. Comparable in size only to the disaster at the Japanese nuclear power plant «Fukushima-1» in 2011.
