Ukraine topped the sanctions Committee of the UN security Council on Sudan

Permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko from January 1, officially began the chairmanship of the Sanctions Committee of the Security Council of this organization in the Republic of Sudan. This was reported in the Mission of Ukraine to the UN.

«Since January 1, Ukraine for 2017 as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council will lead the work of the Sanctions Committee of the Republic of Sudan», the speaker informed the Permanent mission of Ukraine to the UN Oleg Nikolenko.

He said that the main mission of Ukraine will be the enforcement of sanctions against this country, including an arms embargo (applies only to Darfur), the travel ban and the seizure of assets of persons involved in the conflict.

«One of the priorities of the non-permanent membership of Ukraine in the UN Security Council is maintaining peace on the African continent,» said Olga Nicolenco. In this regard, he recalled that from the beginning of 2016, our state was headed by the Sanctions Committee of the security Council on the Central African Republic.

«This is evidence that Ukraine could take on global responsibility», – said the Ukrainian diplomat.

The sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council on the Sudan established pursuant to security Council resolution 1591 in 2005 to deter armed conflict in the Darfur region. The situation in Sudan monitors specially created in the framework of the Committee organ – a Group of independent experts, which includes five representatives. Their mandate was renewed by decision of the UN Security Council annually.
