Ukraine — the three European leaders on violations of journalists ‘ rights

In the third quarter of 2016 in Ukraine there were 44 cases of violations of journalists ‘ rights and countering their activities. This is stated in the report Mapping Media Freedom, writes Ukrainian Pravda.

Higher rate was recorded only in Turkey (114 cases) and Russia (58 cases).

The report notes that the overall growth of the opposition media in the third quarter of 2016, was unprecedented. Is especially influenced by the situation in Turkey, where after the coup of 15 July, the government deprived the work of 2,500 journalists, condemned and closed 98 133 edition.

Overall in the third quarter recorded the killing of four journalists, two of them – in Ukraine: the journalist of «the Ukrainian truth» Pavel Sheremet, which blew up in the car, and the journalist of «New region» Alexander Shchetinin, who was found shot to death in his apartment in Kiev.

The Turkish Pro-government newspaper photographer Mustafa Cambaz was shot by soldiers in Turkey and the operator of the channel «Russia-1» Andrey Nazarenko were found shot dead in his apartment in Moscow.

The report also refers to the attack on the TV channel «inter» and beating of the Ukrainian journalist Sergei Medianik.

In General, the authors of the study recorded in the third quarter of 406 confirmed cases of violation of freedom of speech in Europe, an increase compared with the second quarter by 19%.

Earlier it was reported that this year opened 159 cases on obstruction of journalists ‘ activities.
