Ukraine has simplified the arrest of judges

The high Council of justice adopted changes to the rules that allow you to immediately consider the idea of giving consent to the judge’s detention or arrest. The decision was announced by Chairman of the Supreme Council of justice Igor Benedik at the meeting on 7 February, the press service of the Council.

According to the decision, the idea of the consent to the arrest of a judge, his detention or arrest is considered by the Council no later than five days from the date of its receipt.

The idea of giving consent to detention or arrest, against a judge who is apprehended during or immediately after committing a serious or especially serious crime, is considered without delay after the receipt of the submission within the terms stipulated by the Criminal procedural code of Ukraine.

«These changes to the regulations of the Council allow the court, for its part, to consider this question within the period stipulated by the Criminal procedural code of Ukraine, that is within 72 hours from the moment of detention of a person», – said Benedick.

It is also noted that if necessary, meetings of the Supreme Council of justice will be conducted in weekends or holidays.

We will remind, the President Petro Poroshenko signed the law on the High Council of justice on 3 January 2017. It entered into force on 5 January.

The high Council of justice was formed by the reorganization of the High Council of justice. It will take measures to ensure the credibility of justice and judicial independence.
