Ukraine expects the support of the Council of Europe Commissioner for human rights Nils Muiznieks of the issue of the release of the correspondent of «UKRINFORM» Roman Sushchenko and all other Ukrainian political prisoners being held in the Russian Federation.

As reported in the press service of the foreign Ministry of Ukraine, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin said at a meeting with Muiznieks today, October 3, during a stay in Strasbourg on the occasion of the Day of Ukrainian reforms in the Council of Europe.

The Minister drew special attention of the interlocutor to the violation of human rights in the Russian Federation. He stressed that Ukraine expects the support and specific steps the Commissioner for the protection of the rights and the liberation of the Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko and all other Ukrainian citizens, who have become political prisoners in Russia.

Klimkin also noted the need to monitor human rights in the occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea and, in particular, details informed the Commissioner about the illegal actions of the Russian occupying authorities in respect of Deputy Chairman of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis Ilmi Umerov.

The Minister of foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius believes that the detention in Russia of Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko looks «like a provocation.»

Such opinion he expressed today, October 3, in Brussels during a conference on «Eastern partnership», UNIAN reports.

«We don’t yet have enough information to make definitive conclusions, but it looks like a provocation. But we need more information to make our position more clearly,» said Linkevičius.

The head of the Lithuanian foreign Minister added that cases of detention of journalists are monitored «very carefully».

As reported, in Moscow, was detained by Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko for alleged «espionage action». Lefortovo court of Moscow on 1 October arrested him for two months.

In Kiev called the detention of the journalist provocation, and allegations of espionage false. The Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin during a visit to Strasbourg (France) at the Days of Ukrainian reforms in the Council of Europe will raise the question of detention in Russia Sushchenko.
