Ukraine condemns placement of the Russian military in the occupied Abkhazia — foreign Ministry statement

The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine condemns the signing by the President of the Russian Federation law on ratification of the so-called agreement with the occupation regime of Sukhumi on establishment of the joint group of forces.

This is stated in the statement released by the press service of the foreign Ministry.

«With this act, the Russian side intends to legitimize the illegal stationing of Russian military units and militants terrorizing the population of Abkhazia. At the same time, the Russian side grossly violates its international obligations, in particular under the agreement on the ceasefire of 12 August 2008», — stated in the document.

According to the Ukrainian foreign Ministry, such actions of the Russian Federation exacerbated tensions in the region, be a hindrance to the plans for the development of international transport and energy corridors, create conditions for the further decline of the occupied territories and trigger new migration flows.

«Ukraine again calls on Russia to withdraw its military units from the occupied territories of Georgia to ensure the creation of national and international security arrangements in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region and to restore the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia», — said in a statement.

Earlier the Georgian foreign Ministry said that Russia violated international law and illegally opened 21st polling station in the occupied territories of Georgia on elections to the State Duma.
