Tusk said that the Polish government is interested in EU membership only in it for the money

The Polish government may try to bring the country out of the European Union, if it ceases to be a recipient of funding. About this in an interview with Tygodnik Powszechny, which was released on 8 January, said European Council President Donald Tusk.

According to Tusk, the ruling Polish party «law and justice» EU membership boils down to «balance of payments», at the same time, it ignores other benefits, such as a common market, rule of law, guaranteed safety and so on.

He noted that «law and justice» can ask the poles whether they want to be in the EU, while convincing them that membership of the country does not need.

Also, Tusk said that the Polish government could still avoid sanctions of the EU, if you stop the changes in the judicial system.

Poland joined the European Union in 2004.

On 29 July, the European Commission has accused the Polish authorities in the implementation of an unbalanced judicial reform.

On 20 December the European Commission invited the EU Council to impose sanctions against Poland. It was noted that over the past two years, the country has adopted 13 laws that allowed the Executive and legislative branches of government to interfere in the work of the courts.

Three former President of Poland – Lech Walesa, Aleksander Kwasniewski and Komorowski – in an open letter said that the judicial reform can lead to the dictatorship of the ruling party «law and justice».

The President of Poland Andrzej Duda on 20 December signed the bills of the National judicial Council and the Supreme court, despite criticism from European institutions.
