Today, November 26, Ukraine honors memory of victims of Holodomor of 1932-1933. This year marks the 84th anniversary of the organized Communist government of the former USSR genocide of the Ukrainian people – the Holodomor of 1932-1933.

According to a study conducted by the Institute of demography and social studies named after mV ptukha NAS of Ukraine together with American researchers, in Ukraine in the years 1932-1934 famine killed approximately 4 million people, or 13% of the total population.

According to others, in the peak months of famine every minute in Ukraine, 24 people died every hour – 1 thousand 440, daily 34 thousand 560. Thus perished 4.5 million Ukrainians.

In Kiev, other Ukrainian cities held ceremonies to commemorate the victims of Holodomor, the Ukrainian world Congress to organize the commemoration of the 32 countries of the world.

Theme events: «the Holodomor is not broke». This year’s national commemorative events dedicated to the people who were able to realize themselves, despite the experience in 1932-1933.

The Institute of national remembrance were chosen among thousands of prominent Ukrainians 15 unbroken heroes, particularly to honor their memory this year. It is the author of the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine in 1991, Levko Lukyanenko, Opera singer Evgeny Miroshnichenko, dissident Ivan Svitlychny and Olexa Quiet, outstanding artist Catherine Bilokur, writers Vasyl Barka, Oles Gonchar, doctor Nona Owska, poet Dmytro Bilous, philosopher Mykola Rudenko, model , Eugenia Sakevich Dallas, historian Michael Sikorski, screenwriter Boris Khandros, novelist Anatoly Dimarov, painter Opanas Zalyvakha.

A memorial service will be held in Kyiv near the National memorial of Holodomor victims in Kiev with participation of witnesses of the famine, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, representatives of diplomatic missions, priests, and the public.

At 16.00, together with a nationwide minute of silence will be held for traditional public action «light candle of memory». Every citizen can light a candle and put it on the windowsill (or balcony), thus honoring the memory of millions of Ukrainians who were killed by famine in Ukraine.

23 countries have officially condemned and recognized the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Note that Canada was the first Western country to recognize the Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainians in 2008. And yesterday, November 25, the canadian Parliament urged to remember the victims of the Holodomor.

Recall that the magnitude of the famine was hidden by the Communist party of the Soviet Union. After the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence in 1991 were declassified Soviet archives. This led to the fact that in 2003 in a joint statement the UN, which was signed by Russia, it was announced that the famine has claimed the lives of millions of innocent people. In October 2008 the European Parliament recognized the Holodomor as a crime against humanity.

The leaders of Ukraine appealed to the nation in connection with Day of memory of victims of Holodomor and urged at 16.00, to light a candle of memory.

«The memory of the terrible crime of the organizers of the famine gives us the power to protect your future. Ukraine remembers…» — wrote the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on their pages in social networks.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman stressed that in Ukraine’s history many tragic pages, but the Holodomor of 1932-1933 – «one of the biggest disasters in the history of European humanity».

«Today, a number of countries have recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people, which was a crime against humanity, which the Ukrainians will never forget and may not forget the international community. Call all today at 16:00 with a moment of silence to honor the victims of Holodomor in Ukraine, as well as to light the memorial candle in your home,» the statement says Groisman.

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andrew Parubiy also called on Ukrainians worldwide to light a candle of memory.

«The National Museum «memorial to victims of Holodomor» stored death certificates of the victims of the Holodomor, and many of them in the column «cause of death» entry is made: «Ukrainian». It is very symbolic. After all, the main task of the enemy was to destroy millions of people just because they were Ukrainians, and to turn the original Ukrainian nation into a faceless «Soviet people», — said Parubiy in the address to Ukrainians.

He also expressed regret due to the fact that the Kremlin and its leadership is leading a new war against the Ukrainian state, and today the Ukrainians are defending their land from the occupier. «I am convinced that we will liberate Ukrainian lands from the enemy and protect our citizens», — said the speaker of Parliament.

«I urge all Ukrainians in all countries of the world Day of memory of victims of Holodomor to light a candle on the window memory of the innocent tortured relatives and millions of Ukrainians. Let the memory of our fallen compatriots strengthens us, unites in the struggle for their own state, in the fight against Russian imperialist!» called paruby.

Secretary of the national security Council and defense of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov also pointed out that the Holodomor is one of the most horrific crimes in human history.

«By the genocide of the Ukrainian people, the Communist regime tried to break our eternal desire for freedom. So today the successor of the USSR — Russia — is trying to destroy Ukraine and Ukrainians. (…) but they will not be able to destroy our will and freedom, our government and our people. Ukraine will live!» the appeal says Turchynov.

He urged his compatriots to light in the 16:00 candle to honor the memory of Ukrainians who perished during the famine.
