The world chess championship in Saudi Arabia women are obliged to wear the hijab or Abaya — FIDE

The international chess Federation (FIDE) announced on its website that it has agreed with the organizers of the world championship in rapid and blitz, which will take place in Saudi Arabia, the non-requirement of observance of Islamic dress code for participants.

«Men should wear dark blue or black pants and white shirts with a tie or without. Women should wear dark blue or black pants and white blouse with a high collar. During the parties, women must wear the hijab or the Abaya,» – said in the message.

The feed is called the decision historic, stressing that earlier during sporting events in Saudi Arabia, exceptions regarding dress code was not provided.

The Federation also said that it would try to facilitate the issuance of visas to all players, regardless of the constraints that exist in Saudi Arabia for citizens of certain countries.

The world Cup of rapid chess will be held in Riyadh from 26th to 30th December.

The current world champion in blitz and rapid Anna Muzychuk from Ukraine on 11 November said that he would not defend his title in Saudi Arabia because of the need to wear the Abaya. According to her, the headscarf in Iran, which hosted the world championship in classical chess 2017, «was quite enough.»

Abaya – the traditional outerwear of Arab women. It is a thin, usually black, cloak. In Saudi Arabia, this garment is recommended for women to wear in public places.
