The USA vetoed a UN security Council resolution on the status of Jerusalem

The USA vetoed the resolution of the UN Security Council on non-recognition of changes in the status of Jerusalem, according to Reuters.

It is noted that all other members of the security Council prepared by the Egyptian draft resolution was supported.

The document said that «any decisions and actions that imply a change of character, status or demographic composition of the Holy city of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are invalid and must be cancelled in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council.»

The draft resolution expressed «deep regret at the recent decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem».

The U.S. permanent representative to the UN, Nikki Haley has called the vote for this resolution an insult. She stressed that the incident will not be forgotten.

Haley recalled that the United States used its veto in the security Council for the first time in more than six years. She stated that she did this «in defense of the sovereignty of States and the protection of the role of America in the middle East peace process.»

On 6 December, the President of the United States Donald trump has officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced the postponement of the U.S. Embassy in this city.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of France Emmanuel macron and Prime Minister of great Britain, Theresa may, did not support the initiative of the White house.

The UN security Council did not support this decision, and the foreign Minister of the European Union Federica Mogherini stated that the EU will not move its Embassy in Israel from tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The Arab League called on the US to abandon its intentions.

In Palestine riots broke out. In clashes between Arab activists and the Israel police injured dozens of people.

In some countries protests were held. The leaders of the 57 Muslim States urged the world to «recognize the State of Palestine» and East Jerusalem as its «occupied capital».

Israel occupied East Jerusalem after the 1967 war and considers the entire city its capital. The Palestinians, in turn, want to declare East Jerusalem the capital of their state.

The administrative capital of Israel is now in tel Aviv and the Palestinian authority based in Ramallah.
