The U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday January 12 imposed additional sanctions against the Syrian government after confirming the facts of mass persecution of the technical chlorine Syrian citizens.
This is stated in the official statement of the U.S. Treasury, reports «UKRINFORM».
«The Syrian regime using chemical weapons against its own people is a heinous act that violates the established global norms against the production and use of chemical weapons,» — said on this occasion, acting Deputy Secretary of the Treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence Adam Szubin.
He stressed that this step by the US «is an important part of the efforts of the international community to prosecute the Syrian regime for violations of the Convention on the prohibition of chemical weapons) and Resolution 2118 of the UN Security Council».
The statement noted that the Office of foreign assets control (OFAC) of the U.S. Treasury Department has taken these measures after the findings of the Organization of prohibition of chemical weapons (joint investigative mechanism of the UN) that «the Syrian regime has used industrial chlorine as a weapon against its own people.»
In this regard, it is clarified that OFAC has included in the sanctions list of 18 senior members of the regime associated with the mass murder of citizens in Syria, as well as five military institutions of the Syrian government.
We will remind, in August 2016, the UN has accused the Syrian government to use chemical weapons. Shortly after the data breach report, the U.S. White house urged to punish Syria, speaking «with one voice» against such crimes. Report on the use of chemical weapons in Syria was jointly prepared by the UN mission and the Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW). The UN experts checked the information and tried to establish those responsible for the use of chemical weapons in nine episodes, previously noted by experts of the OPCW. In six cases, the UN failed to identify the party who used chemical weapons — however, it is noted that in three of them the investigation will continue. On two occasions, UN experts accused government forces, and in another — terrorists «Islamic state».
As reported, in 2013, the Syrian government agreed to destroy all stockpiles of chemical weapons according to the results of difficult negotiations involving the United States and Russia, which was presented as a major success of world diplomacy. Then the transaction was accompanied by the UN resolution, a separate paragraph which provided for the imposition of sanctions in case of non-compliance with the terms of the agreement.
