The US Ambassador supported the resignation.

U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt said that he welcomes the resignation of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Shokin.

«I welcome the decision of the President of Ukraine on the dismissal of Prosecutor General, this will facilitate further reform (Prosecutor’s office)», — Payette said at a conference in Kiev on February 18, reports «Interfax-Ukraine».

The Ambassador also noted that he believes that the task of the President and the Parliament — to agree upon the nomination of a new Prosecutor General, who needs to have support among the deputies and the trust of civil society. Also the new attorney General must be determined to reform the Prosecutor’s office.

«In this respect Ukraine has a successful model on the example of the introduction of the new patrol police. This is an example of how to create opportunities for radical changes,» added Pyatt.

According to the diplomat, the reform of the prosecution is «critical to the effectiveness of the system of the rule of law».
