The UN has urged the immediate cessation of hostilities in the Donbass

The humanitarian coordinator of the United Nations in Ukraine Neal Walker said the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Donbas to prevent loss of life.

As noted in the press release of the UN office in Ukraine, Walker is seriously concerned about the rapid deterioration in security in Eastern Ukraine and its possible consequences.

«Of particular concern are the consequences for the civilian population on both sides of the demarcation line. Continues to receive information about the victims. Sighting damage to civilian infrastructure only exacerbates the difficult situation that is further exacerbated by the harsh winter and may lead to irreversible consequences,» — said in a press release.

The UN representative office in Ukraine noted that the Ukrainian government makes all efforts to support and coordinate humanitarian action.

«From-for continuous attacks January 30, Donetsk filtering station stopped working, leaving from 15 thousand to 17 thousand inhabitants of the Town without water, which also may have implications for another 400 thousand persons who receive water from this station. Avdeevka were cut off from electricity supply on January 29, which can operate the heating system of the city, which also affected the water supply from the reserve reservoir,» — said in a press release.

In addition, according to the UN office, on 30 January in the shelling was damaged high-voltage fourth power line to the Avdeevsky coke-chemical plant, leaving it without electricity, which further affected the supply of hot water in the heating system. The UN representative office in Ukraine declare that it is necessary to conduct urgent repair work to restart the heating system.

«In winter conditions when the temperature is much below -10 degrees Celsius, non-functioning heating system will freeze and restart will take weeks. Despite the fact that the authorities had found a temporary solution for the water circulation, it is not sustainable. Repair crews are in standby mode, but the constant attacks hamper restoration work,» — said in a press release.

It is noted that the supply of water was fully or partially suspended in some areas of Donetsk and its outskirts, including Yasinovataya, Verkhnetoretsky, Spartacus and Vasilevka. In Donetsk, the water flow is redistributed from the top-Kalmiuska filtration plant. Other cities are supplied with water from local reservoirs, the capacity of which is designed for 24 hours. In such villages, as Vasilevka, Spartacus, Verkhnetoretskoye and Kruta Balka, the supply of water completely stopped, part of the Yasinovataya also cut off from water supply.

«We need an immediate cessation of hostilities to avoid further loss of life and to enable maintenance crews to urgently restore critical basic services for hundreds of thousands of affected civilians in severe cold conditions, below -10 degrees Celsius,» said Walker.

We will remind, on January 29 it was reported that the Russian occupation vooruzhennye hybrid formation was carried out assault operations in the area of Avdeyevka industrial zone with the aim of capturing the positions of the Armed forces of Ukraine. Both sides suffered serious losses.
