The UN has reported that negotiations on the reunification of Cyprus failed

Talks on the reunification of divided Cyprus, which were conducted in Switzerland under the auspices of the United Nations ended in failure.

The United Nations reported Tuesday that the sides (Greeks and Turks-Cypriots — ed.) could not agree.

In the latest round of talks, the leader of the Greek Cypriot Nicos Anastasiades and the leader of the Turkish Cypriots Mustafa Akindzhi tried to reach an agreement within two days.

«Despite all their efforts, they were unable to achieve further convergence on criteria for territorial adjustments that would allow to move to the final stage of negotiations. Both sides decided to return to Cyprus and to consider further steps,» – said in a UN statement on the results of negotiations.

Recall that the island of Cyprus remains divided into two parts since 1974 when Turkey invaded Cyprus in response to coup attempt unite the island with Greece.

The island was divided into the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and recognized in the world the Republic of Cyprus in the South.

As reported, the leaders of Cyprus after a year of negotiations, spoke for the Union in 2016.

The Cyprus dispute is a major obstacle to Turkey’s accession to the European Union over Ankara’s refusal to recognize Cyprus.
