The state attorney believes that Yanukovych must participate in the trial via videoconference

State lawyer of fugitive ex-President Viktor Yanukovych Vitaly Meshechek called for the participation of the defendant in the trial via videoconference. He said this to journalists in the building of Obolon district court of Kyiv on July 12, reports «Interfax-Ukraine».

According to the lawyer, the participation of the former President in the trial by videoconference is not necessary «for a fair trial, a fair consideration».

«I think that Yanukovych must participate in the hearing via videoconference, and no one has the right to take the opportunity to ask questions to witnesses, experts, and anyone else involved in criminal proceedings, to file petitions, complaints, taps. This is my opinion and the opinion of the previous defenders – I fully support,» said Machacek.

Yanukovych was elected Ukraine’s President in 2010. Fled to Russia in February 2014 after mass anti-government protests in Central Kiev.

In Ukraine against Yanukovych openly some criminal proceedings. He is accused of mass killings of citizens, misappropriation of state property, the unconstitutional seizure of power, actions aimed at overthrowing the constitutional order, terrorism, and treason.

On March 28, a panel of Appellate court of Kiev made the decision that criminal proceedings on charges of Yanukovych of treason will consider the Obolonskiy district court of Kiev. On 29 June, the court allowed the in absentia procedure of consideration of the case of treason.
