The head of the Romanian foreign Ministry Teodor Melescanu during a press conference with Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin in Chernivtsi said that he sees no problems in granting Romania passports to Ukrainian citizens, reports «UKRINFORM».
«As for dual citizenship, there are no rules of international law or of certain practices which prevent or prohibit dual citizenship. This right of each state to provide a simple single or double citizenship,» he said.
Melescanu declined to say how many Ukrainian citizens received Romanian passports, citing the fact that the Romanian legislation provides the international right to protection of personal data.
The Minister said that he does not understand «the interest in this issue at today’s meeting.»
Klimkin told reporters after a meeting with the head of Chernivtsi regional state administration Alexander Visucom that the issuance of passports in Romania will help the Romanian community in Ukraine to achieve European integration.
«I said, and the predecessors of Mr. Melescanu, and Mr. Melescanu: by issuing passports, we will not achieve the European integration of the Romanian community. We will achieve this by the entry of Ukraine into the European Union», – he said.
In Ukraine dual citizenship is prohibited. According to article 19 of the law of Ukraine «On citizenship», one of the grounds for loss of Ukrainian citizenship is «voluntary acquisition of citizen of Ukraine of citizenship of another state».
