The Prosecutor General’s office explained, why do not want to detain Yanukovych – media

The Prosecutor General’s office States that refused to Ukraine in the temporary arrest and detention of former President Viktor Yanukovych, arguing his prosecution was politically motivated.

This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Ministry Alexander Kurennoy, RIA «Novosti».

Kurennoy said that in 2015-2016 from the state office of public Prosecutor of Ukraine in connection with the conduct of preliminary investigations was received for provisional arrest and detention of Yanukovych.

In the result these petitions dismissed on the basis of paragraph 2 of article 3 of the European Convention on extradition.

Under this article of the Convention, extradition shall not be granted if the person accused of committing a political offence.

The representative of the Prosecutor General said that the Russian Supervisory authority has denied Ukraine the petition in 2015-2016.

In mid-January the General Prosecutor’s office stated that he had not received from the competent authorities of Ukraine requests for extradition of Viktor Yanukovych.

As reported, the Pechersky regional court of Kiev on January 30 rendered a decision on the detention of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, a fugitive after fleeing the country for Russia.
