The Prince of Saudi Arabia urged to allow women to drive

Saudi Prince al-Waleed bin Talal urged to immediately lift the country’s ban on women driving.

«Enough debate: time to allow women to drive,» wrote the Prince in his official Twitter account.

In a statement earlier statement on behalf of the Prince argues that the ban on driving is a violation of women’s rights.

«The prohibition of women to drive a car today is as much a question of rights, as the ban on their education», — said in a statement, al-Waleed bin Talal.

The ban on driving by women in Saudi Arabia was introduced in 1957. Today Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive cars and other vehicles.

In the 1990-ies there was a movement for women’s right to drive cars. Dozens of women in Riyadh got behind the wheel of a car and was arrested and deprived of their passports.
