The President of Serbia threatens to send the army to Kosovo

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic has said it is ready to send troops to Kosovo in the event of threats to the lives and safety of the Serbian population. Such a statement, as reported by the local TV company PTC, the head of state made after a meeting of the national security Council of Serbia, writes

«This is not our war, but we will send soldiers if we deem it necessary to protect our citizens. We will win, this is not the first time,» said Nikolic.

Tomislav Nikolic accused the Kosovo Albanians of «provoking war» after the train stop in Belgrade on his route to the North Kosovo on 14 January. About it reports Radio Freedom.

«Yesterday we were on the verge of collision,» said Nikolic on January 15.

He said that Serbia would defend «every inch of its territory», including its former province of Kosovo, where, according to him, ethnic Serbs are under threat from the Kosovo Albanians.

January 14, Serbia decided to stop the promo-train, traveling from Belgrade to the city of Mitrovica (North Kosovo) because of reports about mining of the railway in Kosovo.

The train, which Serbia bought in Russia, has been painted in the colors of the Serbian flag with images of churches, monasteries and medieval cities, as well as an inscription in 21 languages — «Kosovo is Serbian». This trip was supposed to be the first Serbian capital in the city of Mitrovica in Kosovo after the 1998-1999 war.

Belgrade does not recognize the independent state of Kosovo, a former Autonomous part of Serbia, which declared independence in 2008. The normalization of relations between the two countries is a precondition for Serbia and Kosovo towards EU membership, which both countries want.
