The Pentagon has sent the White house a request for authorization to provide lethal weapons to Ukraine, including anti-tank Javelin. About it reports NBC News with reference to words of three American officials.
The cost of the package of assistance, which the Pentagon offers to provide Ukraine almost $50 million.
The channel sources said that the decision has not been made yet, but noted that the Pentagon is in favour of giving lethal weapons to Ukraine.
A Pentagon spokesman told the channel that the Agency «did not pass».
Ukraine since the beginning of the military aggression of Russia in the spring of 2014 is holding negotiations with Western countries on the supply of lethal weapons, but so far without success. At the moment, the US supply Kiev only non-lethal aid (including armored Humvee vehicles, the unmanned RQ-11B Raven and counter-battery radars), and assist in the preparation of the Ukrainian military.
In February 2016, the former commander of NATO forces in Europe General Philip Breedlove has submitted recommendations to the government of the USA on granting Ukraine lethal weapons.
In may 2017 that advice to the new administration of the White house gave former Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
The special representative of the US state Department’s Kurt Volker on July 25 in an interview with BBC said that Washington is actively considering the possible supply of weapons to Ukraine.
July 31 edition of the Wall Street Journal wrote that the US had developed a plan for the delivery of defensive weapons to Ukraine. We are talking about the transfer of anti-tank missiles Javelin and anti-aircraft defense.
The budget of the United States to 2017 envisages the allocation to Ukraine $350 million in aid to strengthen security and defense.
