The number of victims of powerful earthquake in the special municipality of Tainan on the island of Taiwan has increased to 40 people, reports the Agency Xinhua. According to data of local authorities, another 107 people are still missing. 38 people died under the rubble of the collapsed 17-storey building.

According to the mayor of Tainan William Lai (Lai of Zenda), the rescue operation is underway, reports TASS. Specialists are considering the use of heavy equipment to expedite debris removal.

Before it became known that the Taiwanese rescuers managed to rescue from the rubble that collapsed from the earthquake 17-storey building of four people: 40-year-old man, an old woman, eight-year-old girl and her aunt.

The earthquake of a magnitude of 6.4 occurred on the island in the night of Saturday, February 6th. As a result, were destroyed about a dozen buildings in the special municipality of Tainan. Tremors were felt in Kaohsiung and Pingtung counties and Chiayi, but there was significant damage is not caused.

Earlier, the President of China XI Jinping expressed condolences to the relatives of the victims and invited the authorities of the island promotion of mainland China in the aftermath of natural disasters.
