The new Chancellor of Austria was the former head of the Railways

The new Chancellor of Austria appointed Christian Kern, said on Tuesday, may 17, 2016, «Interfax-Ukraine» with reference to the European media.

«You enter into the great and wonderful, but at the same time, challenging role with extensive scope of responsibility,» — said the President of the country Heinz Fischer, leading to the inauguration of the new head of government.

Kern, who for several years headed the state company «Austrian Railways» will replace on a post of the Chancellor retired Werner Faymann.

In the beginning of last week the leader of the Social democratic party Faymann gave the President the Fisher resignation, saying his failure in the recent elections and the insufficient level of support from members of the social Democrats.

Faymann was the Prime Minister of Austria since December 2008. Critics blame him for the fact that he changed the course of Pro-European Social democratic party in the direction of euroscepticism. In 2015 Faymann criticised the «wait and see» approach German counterpart Angela Merkel to the economic problems of the European Union. During the refugee crisis, the government under his leadership has resorted to tough decisions, Vienna also announced plans to substantially restrict the flow of refugees and build a fence on the border with Italy.

The resignation Faymann took place against the backdrop of the presidential campaign in Austria. In the first round of elections more than one third of the votes received by the candidate from right-wing populists from the Austrian freedom party.
