The national Bank says high interest rates on deposits in state banks

The national Bank believes that state-owned commercial banks now offer too high interest rates on deposits, reports Lb.ua.

«As the regulator we have a lot of questions about why state-owned banks compete among themselves, offering such high rates to corporate and retail segment,» — said Wednesday the Director of the financial stability Department of the NBU Vitaly vavrischuk.

According to the NBU, this issue should be resolved within a few months.

«We need some adaptation period to «PrivatBank». New management needs to define short and medium-term strategy. After a couple of months the situation will become more stable and banks will not ask such a high level of resources,» said vavrischuk.

At the moment, the banks offer some of the highest interest rates on hryvnia deposits (for 12 months): «PrivatBank» — 20% per annum, «Ukrgasbank» — 19% per annum, Oshchadbank is 17.5%.

Recall that the state now owns four of the largest Bank in Ukraine «PrivatBank», «Oschadbank», «Ukreximbank», «Ukrgasbank».
