The Ministry of environment plans to establish a reserve in the Chernobyl zone

The Ministry of ecology and natural resources appealed to the presidential Administration with a proposal to create in the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl radiological biosphere reserve with a total area of 227 thousand hectares.

This was at a meeting of the parliamentary Committee on environmental policy, nature use and liquidation of consequences of the Chernobyl disaster on 23 February, reported the acting head of the Ministry of environment Anna Vronskaya.

«In connection with the celebration of the 30 anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy this year we are taking all measures as soon as possible was signed the decree of the President about creation of the Chernobyl radiological biosphere reserve. We hope that will have time until April 26. Preparatory work has already been done, the steps expected from the presidential Administration,» said Bronski.

Bronski also said that the Ministry plans to increase the area of protected areas in Ukraine to the European average.

«Under the terms of the Association Agreement with the European Union, we must increase the total area of the reserve Fund to about 15% (the country – ed.). We hope that next year will reach at least 8%», — said the acting Minister of ecology and natural resources.

We will remind, in the spring of 2015, the head of the Ministry of environment Igor Shevchenko said that the Ministry plans to reduce the territory of the Chernobyl exclusion zone from 30 to 10 kilometers around a nuclear plant stopped.

The exclusion zone of the Chernobyl NPP, also known as the Chernobyl exclusion zone in 1986-1987 called 30-kilometer zone — prohibited access to the territory is exposed to intensive contamination with radionuclides due to the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Now the size of the exclusion zone is approximately 260 thousand hectares.

Chernobyl zone includes North of the Ivankov district, Kiev region, where are located directly power plant, Chernobyl and Pripyat, North of Polessky district of Kiev region.
