The leader of the faction of the European Parliament urged to stop the construction of the «Nord stream — 2»

German Deputy Manfred Weber, who leads the largest faction of the European Parliament, group of the European people’s party, urged Europe to stop the construction of the pipeline «Nord stream – 2». About it reports the EUobserver.

«We should stop «North stream – 2″, because our security is, dear friends, is a higher priority than making money,» said Weber in a speech at the session of the European Parliament.

The project «Northern stream – 2», headed by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, involves the construction of two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion m3 of gas per year from Russia to Germany under the Baltic sea. The existing gas pipeline «Nord stream» consists of two strings with a length of 1224 km with a capacity of 27.5 billion m3 each. It runs along the bottom of the Baltic sea. Gazprom began deliveries on this gas pipeline in 2012.

In December 2015, the President of the European Council Donald Tusk said that the project of the second turn of the pipeline «Nord stream» does not correspond to the energy regulations of the EU («Third energy package») and undermining Ukraine’s role as gas transit country.

In March 2016, eight EU countries have signed an appeal to the European Commission to protest against the gas pipeline project.

Signed on 2 August President of the United States Donald trump bill on the new anti-sanctions suggests that restrictions will apply to construction of the pipeline «Nord stream – 2».
