The leader of the Agrarian party Skotsyk: Discussion of referendum on joining the EU and NATO – it’s election technology

You cannot make changes to the Constitution Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO and the European Union. This opinion was expressed by the leader of the Agrarian party of Ukraine Vitaliy Skotsyk broadcast talk-show «Ukrainian format» on the TV channel NewsOne, on March 28.

«The Constitution is the basic law or the social contract, which is for centuries. We have a President who comes to power, leaves the initiative to make any changes to the Constitution. It can’t be. We can have a foreign policy vector that is set by the state and on which we walk today. Not the fact that the European Union will remain in the same form as today, 25-30 years, that he will be such an institution. Not the fact that NATO will remain the institution that it is today. Therefore, it is impossible to talk today about how to amend the Constitution, because the President thinks so. It should not be. The Constitution should remain as it is,» he said.

According to him, Ukraine and NATO discussed the further actions, and the last summit was held 10 years ago.

«If we are talking about referendums, the last summit of the NATO–Ukraine took place ten years ago. We have not had a conversation with NATO on how to move forward. What we’re going to go to the people in a referendum? To talk about whether we want to NATO, or whether NATO wants us to see there, or are we ready to be there. The same situation is with the European Union. We are approaching parliamentary and presidential elections, so talk about the referendum already look like election technology, not as a desire to join NATO or the EU,» said Skotsyk.

Ukraine has intensified its cooperation with NATO in 2014, against the annexation of Crimea to Russia and armed conflict in the Donbass. At the end of 2014, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law on Ukraine’s refusal from the policy of «non-alignment».

In accordance with the new Military doctrine of Ukraine, adopted in 2015, the deepening of cooperation with NATO and the achievement of the 2020 full interoperability of the Armed forces of Ukraine with armies of the countries – members of NATO is a priority. The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the decision on Ukraine’s accession to NATO will be made at the referendum.
