The justice Ministers of the Baltic States agreed to demand from Russia compensation for the Soviet occupation

Today, February 5, 2015 city, the Ministers of justice of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania signed in Riga the Memorandum of cooperation, which coordinated action on presentation of the Russian demands for reparations for the Soviet occupation, reports Estonian public TV.

According to the Minister of justice of Estonia Urmas Reinsalu, Putin’s Russia is a state-successor of the Soviet Union, under occupation which in the past were the Baltic States. The justice Ministers of the Baltic States believe that the legal continuity of the Baltic States allows us to propose such a requirement. Under international law, in the case of occupation it is possible to demand as compensation and apology in the form of satisfaction.

As a first step was agreed upon unification of methods of evaluation of damage. Is then jointly formulated the requirement about damage compensation in accordance with international law, and prepared legal steps to his presentation.

Reinsalu emphasized that none of the Baltic States has not abandoned and does not intend to unilaterally waive this requirement. In addition to the requirements on the part of States, in the analysis of the need for collective demands of individuals as to the successor of the occupying state and to the companies who used slave labor.

In Estonia the occupation damage was estimated by the Commission on investigation of repressive policy of the occupation regime, which completed its work in 2004.

In Latvia, a special Commission was created in 2008. One of the goals of her work called the creation of a complete database of all rassasavanii by the Soviet authorities, in particular 55 580 inhabitants of Latvia deported on 25 March 1949.
