The Venice Commission together with the Council of Europe has supported and will support the process of judicial reform in Ukraine. About this in his speech on 15 December to mark the start of work of the Supreme Court of Ukraine said the President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio, the correspondent of «GORDON».
«The Venice Commission contributed to the reform process… and supported as new institutions which were engaged in the reform process, and such bodies as the Highest qualification Commission», – Buquicchio said.
According to him, «this is the first Supreme Court of the independent Ukraine, which is to be honest.»
He also said that the Supreme Court regained the authority that he had previously selected specialized courts.
«I appeal to the judges of the Supreme Court and say that the people of Ukraine are watching you and will know when you return to the inappropriate practice and this would be unacceptable. Judges in other countries are also always trying to gain the trust of its citizens», – continued the head of the Venice Commission.
He stressed that the process of judicial reform in Ukraine is not finished.
«We are only at the beginning. As for the courts, we are moving from the old to the new system, and this process should be completed, particularly as regards the anticorruption body, which had been recommended by the Venice Commission. The anti-corruption court should be integrated into your legal system,» – said Buquicchio.
In addition, he stressed that reform of the Supreme Court in Ukraine is not enough. «Citizens generally come into contact with the lower courts, and these courts also need to reform» – said Buquicchio.
He stressed that «it is very advised to create this anti-corruption court.»
On 15 December the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko announced that it is to administer justice in the Supreme Court in Ukraine will be 115 judges.

The law «On judicial system and status of judges» States that the APU is «the highest court in the judiciary system of Ukraine, which ensures consistency and uniformity of judicial practice».
The APU consists of a Large chamber of Cassation, administrative court, Appellate commercial court, criminal court of Cassation, Cassation civil court. The structure of each of the court of cassation is composed of judges of the relevant specialization.
