The EU brought out from under sanctions against the Russian rocket fuel required for a flight to Mars

The Council of the European Union withdrew from under the previously imposed sanctions against Russia operations on purchase or sale of rocket fuel hydrazine used in the second phase of joint Russian-European project ExoMars. Decision of 30 November, published in the Official journal of the EU.

The document stresses that the provision of Russian companies during transactions hydrazine any technical or financial assistance is subject to prior approval of «competent authorities».

«Izvestia» wrote that the production of hydrazine in Russia was curtailed in the 1990-ies. Since then, he purchased abroad, mainly in Germany. In 2014, after the imposition of sanctions by the EU, the supply of hydrazine in Russia has stopped, since this type of fuel is used in particular for the implementation of military programs. In February 2016, the plant for the production of hydrazine was built in Nizhny Novgorod region.

The ExoMars project is implemented in the framework of the agreement signed by Federal space Agency of Russia (Roskosmos) and the European space Agency in March 2013.

In March 2016 the project from the Baikonur cosmodrome carrier rocket «proton» (uses hydrazine) was launched into space later released into interplanetary orbit, the probe Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). In October of the same year from TGO separated experimental lander Schiaparelli, who was to sit on the surface of Mars, but crashed while landing.

In 2020 under the second stage of the ExoMars project on Mars must be delivered automatically the Rover with a complex of scientific equipment «Pasteur» for the direct study of the surface and atmosphere of Mars, says RBC.
