European Commissioner for enlargement negotiations and neighbourhood policy, Johannes Hahn warned Ukraine not to hold early elections and stressed the importance to allow the government to work till the end of his term. He said this on Monday in Brussels during the conference «Ukrainian reforms and the role of the EU: how to release the Ukrainian economic potential», reports UNIAN.
«It is important that the government worked to the end of his mandate, from the European side there is no appetite for early elections, because any electoral campaign leads to the suspension of necessary reform process,» said Khan.
According to him, the EU believes that «it is very important to give the government work until the last moment, and then elections should be held in accordance with the usual democratic procedures and rules».
«After that, it is hoped, will be a continuation of the very successful reforms,» said the Commissioner.
Khan has described as «unprecedented reform efforts that makes the Ukraine in 2014».
«It is a fact that Ukraine did two and a half years more than twenty years. You need to consider this in a while, because everybody is very impatient, expecting results. I think a lot was achieved. And it was done in extremely difficult conditions — Russia is doing everything in their power to undermine Ukraine,» he said.
The Commissioner said that in addition to the illegal annexation of Crimea and the ongoing war in the Donbass, Ukraine «also suffers from the economic war».
«Russian economic boycott of Ukraine led to the loss of 1/3 of exports in one night that had brought the economy close to collapse. With EU support, the Ukrainian government managed to return the situation back. The progress they have achieved is undeniable,» — said Khan.
In addition, according to him, the Ukrainian government «works hard to guide the economy to the European market», which promotes the use of the deep and comprehensive free trade area.
