The Colombian Congress approved a peace agreement with FARC rebels

The lower house of the Colombian Congress ratified the peace agreement with the rebel group «Revolutionary armed forces of Colombia» (FARC). It is reported by BBC Russian.

Agreement with the FARC, which should put an end to the war, which lasted more than 50 years, voted by 130 deputies. Against anybody has not voted.

The President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos and FARC leader Rodrigo Londoño signed a second peace agreement on November 24.

The first agreement was signed in late September. This was followed by a referendum in which the majority of inhabitants of the country voted against the peace agreement.

After approval of the agreement from the FARC have six months to renounce the use of weapons and form a political party that could participate in the elections of 2018.

For reaching the truce with the FARC, the Colombian President received the Nobel peace prize. He promised to transfer 975 thousand dollars to victims of the conflict with the group.

The armed wing of the Communist party was established in Colombia in 1964. Since then, the country the civil war continued. By 2002, the number of FARC reached 200 thousand people, and the movement controlled a third of the country. Peace talks began in 2012. Before that, the FARC suffered a series of major military defeats.
