Obstacles for foreign investments in Ukraine are corruption and lack of rule of law, said the Ambassador of Switzerland in Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova Guillaume Soarer in interview to Agency «Interfax-Ukraine».
«Corruption is a problem. The fact that there is no respect for the rule of law. Those two elements, because of which many businessmen doubt whether to come to Ukraine. They are ready to deal with the competition, business problems, problems of production, but not with these two problems, and they have few opportunities for positive interaction. And they don’t like it because they are in the hands of local authorities or judges or inspectors, or anyone else,» he said.
Seurer added that first you need to protect companies that operate in Ukraine, and then will be able to attract to the country new. The Ambassador said that he had repeatedly heard stories of representatives of Swiss companies in Ukraine on cases of direct and indirect corruption.
«One company is investing hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the other five dollars. Conditions are not equal. Thus, one company gets (and it is an indirect corruption), the opportunity to reduce the price because they likely paid fire inspector money not to have fire protection systems. And that’s what I heard from companies,» he said.
Seurer stressed that such problems are not only Swiss companies but also Ukrainian.
By the end of 2016 Ukraine took the 131 th position in the ranking of perceptions of corruption compiled by Transparency International. The report notes that over the year Ukraine has demonstrated a minimal improvement in the index that «may be associated with the launch of electronic Declaration system».
Permanent representative of the International monetary Fund in Ukraine Jost Longman said in November 2017 that corruption annually costs the Ukraine 2% economic growth.
