Tefft said that the sanctions against Russia have not led to a reversal of the situation in Ukraine

U.S. Ambassador John Tefft, who completed his mission in Russia, said in an interview with «Kommersant» that the anti-Russian sanctions have not led to improvement of the situation in Ukraine, however, has had an economic effect on Russia.

According to him, the sanctions will obviously not have resulted in «fundamental change» of the situation in the Donbass, however, the restrictive measures impact on Russia’s access to financial markets.

Answering the question whether the differences between the US and the EU on the issue of sanctions, Tefft added that «the split on the Russian question.»

According to him, «even if there are some differences,» they do not affect basic trust «between the US and our allies.»

Sanctions against Russia imposed by the US and the EU in the spring of 2014 after Russia annexed the Ukrainian Peninsula of Crimea and military aggression in Eastern Ukraine. The sanctions packages several times expanded and tightened.
