Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland handed a letter from the journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was illegally arrested in Russia. This is stated on the website of the Permanent mission of Ukraine to the COE.

Sushchenko wrote a letter from Lefortovo prison, where he now resides.

In the letter Sushchenko wrote that he wants to see his son grow up and to get back to work as a journalist.

«Fully sharing the European values, which is based on freedom and human life, I appeal to You with a personal request to participate in my life. Mr. Thorbjorn Jagland, my expectations and a great desire to see how growing up my nine-year-old son Maxim, to raise him and return to journalistic work is very large this year,» reads the letter.

Transmitting a letter of the permanent representative of Ukraine to the COE Dmitry Kuleba noted that the release of Ukrainian political prisoners, which Moscow illegally detained in the occupied Crimea and in Russia, should be one of the priorities of the Council of Europe as a human rights organization.

He also drew attention to the case of the other illegally concluded with the Russian journalist Nicholas Semeny.

The daughter of Roman Sushchenko yuliia at the presentation of film UA/TV, «prisoners of the Kremlin,» read a letter from the father addressed to the President, diplomats, parliamentarians, colleagues, friends and family, reports «UKRINFORM».

In the letter, the journalist says, the shock has worn off and it was replaced by calmness and confidence.

«Time spent in prison allowed to critically reflect on life, assess the reality and to think well over the future. Jerky nuggets of information from the outside gave a spark of hope, and, subsequently, meetings with the lawyer and our Consul. Visits of human rights defenders and outspoken letters of caring people strengthened this feeling,» writes Sushchenko.

As reported, the Lefortovo district court of Moscow extended the arrest of illegally detained in Russia journalist of UKRINFORM Roman Sushchenko another three months — until 30 April 2017.

Recall Sushchenko, in violation of international rules was detained September 30 in Moscow, where he arrived on a private trip.

On 7 October he was charged with «espionage». The FSB of Russia stated that Sushchenko is an employee of the Main intelligence Directorate of the defense Ministry of Ukraine. In Gur MOU refuted this statement, including officially stating that it is not true.

Roman Sushchenko is working in the Ukrainian national information Agency «UKRINFORM» in 2002, as a correspondent in France since 2010.

On January 24, at the session of the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg adopted a resolution in which demands were made to release Roman Sushchenko, and to stop the harassment of Ukrainian journalists on the territory of the occupied Crimea.
