Stoltenberg: NATO will continue to provide Ukraine with political and practical support

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference on 4 December said that he had discussed with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko country is facing challenges. This writes the Agency «Interfax-Ukraine».

«Last week I had a very good meeting with President Poroshenko, he was at my house. We discussed the fight against the challenges facing Ukraine, particularly Russia’s attempts to destabilize the situation in the East of the country», – said Stoltenberg.

He noted that «reaffirmed the strong support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine».

«I reiterated that we will continue to provide Ukraine with political and practical support», – said Stoltenberg.

NATO Secretary General recalled that recently visited Kiev, the North Atlantic Council.

«We had many meetings at various levels. Soon we will have a meeting of the Commission NATO – Ukraine, so our dialogue continues,» he said.

24 Nov Poroshenko met with Stoltenberg in Brussels. The President of Ukraine noted that Ukraine at the legislative level continued implementation of a policy of Euro-Atlantic integration and reforming the defence sector. After the meeting, NATO Secretary General stated that «NATO remains with Ukraine and our partnership strong.»

Ukraine has intensified its cooperation with NATO in 2014, against the annexation of Crimea to Russia and armed conflict in the Donbass. At the end of 2014, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law that requires the refusal of Ukraine from the policy of «non-alignment». In June 2017, the Parliament approved a law confirming Ukraine’s intention to join NATO.

Poroshenko said that the decision on Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance will be taken at the referendum. On 14 October he said that a member of NATO Ukraine will become necessary.
