The representative of Ukraine to the EU, Ambassador Nicholas Tochitskii, the European Commission expressed its concern in connection with statements of the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker to Ukraine during the annual conference of ambassadors in Brussels on August 29. About this Tochitskii said in comments UNIAN.
The Ambassador stressed that cadets are not left without attention of the Ukrainian leadership and representation at the EU. Tochitskii told that officially applied to the European Commission for clarification about statements by Juncker
«I also drew attention to the actual words of the President of Ukraine Poroshenko, speaking on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of independence of Ukraine, noted the invariability of the strategic course of Ukraine on integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures. Allegedly told (the President) about the fact that Ukraine is in the EU and NATO, is not true. So to my colleagues in the Commission I was concerned, because the words of the President of the European Commission was widely used primarily for propaganda in the Russian media to discredit Ukraine and our European integration course», – the diplomat said.
However, he noted that the EU’s support for Ukraine and «notes the reforms implemented by Ukraine».
«We have to wait for an official explanation, but the concern we expressed,» said Tochitskii.
On August 24 the celebrations of the independence Day of Ukraine Poroshenko said: «we have one Road – wide Euro-Atlantic highway leading to membership of the European Union and NATO membership».
29 Aug Juncker, commenting on the words Poroshenko said: «Recently, my friend Poroshenko said, «Look, Ukraine is almost the EU and NATO.» However, at the moment she is neither there nor there, and it is important to understand this.»
Ukraine has intensified its cooperation with NATO in 2014, against the annexation of Crimea to Russia and armed conflict in the Donbass. At the end of 2014, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law that requires the refusal of Ukraine from the policy of «non-alignment». In June 2017 the Parliament supported the law, which establishes the intention of Ukraine to join NATO.
Poroshenko reported that the decision on Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance will be taken at the referendum.
The Association agreement Ukraine and the EU signed in 2014 and in 2017 entered into force on visa-free regime between Ukraine and the European Union.
In 2014, Poroshenko said that in five years Ukraine should apply for EU membership. In July 2017 he said that the reforms necessary for Ukraine for NATO membership, is 98% identical to the reforms required for EU accession. «Today the Ukrainian people… finally United around as the transatlantic and European integration», – said the head of state.
