Socialists of Moldova supported Dodon on the federalization to resolve the Transnistria issue, the Democrats – vs

Moldova’s main political parties differed in estimates of the outcome of the visit of the President Igor Dodon in Moscow. The party of socialists (psrm), which has 24 seats out of 101 in Parliament, said on Wednesday, January 18 that supports the initiatives of its former leader Igor Dodon, who has suspended the membership in the psrm after his election as President, writes Interfax-Ukraine.

The socialists published on its website material that support the possibility of denunciation of the Association Agreement with the EU on Moldova’s accession to the EAEU, as well as on the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict through federalization of Moldova.

«In 2013, the year of the psrm was developed and presented to the public the project of reintegration of the Republic on the basis of federalization», — noted on the website of the psrm.

In turn, the Democratic party criticized this position, noting that «the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict can only be achieved through dialogue «5 + 2″, and no solutions outside of this format.»

«The PDM says it (the federalization of the country) is not a solution that contributes to the unification of the country, but rather opens the way for separation. This approach can lead to wrong and dangerous negotiations», — emphasized in the PDM message published on their website.

The democratic party is in favour of further dialogue in the format «5+2».

«PDM has supported and will support the unitary character of the Republic of Moldova», — stated in the message.

The democratic party has 20 seats out of 101 in Parliament, but the ruling is, as it plays a main role in the ruling coalition, with 58 seats.
Moldova is a parliamentary Republic where the main decisions taken by Parliament and the government, the President plays a ceremonial role.

In this regard, the democratic party said that «the country’s foreign policy is decided by Parliament, not the President».

Earlier it was reported that the President of Moldova Igor Dodon for the first time since 2008, met with the leader of Transnistria.
