SBU detained in Zhytomyr region nearly two dozen illegal miners of amber

In Zhytomyr region during the next night’s RAID, an interdepartmental team consisting of employees of the security service of Ukraine and police have detained a group of miners of amber.

About it reported in a press-the SBU center.

The report notes: «Nearly two dozen residents of Rivne and Kyiv, using powerful lights and hydraulic pumps, illegally procured «sun stone» in the land Sarnicola Slovechansko forestry of state forestry. Employees receive in a 12 hour work night up to one thousand hryvnias.

Detainees seized nearly three kilograms of amber (including a piece of a large fraction of the estimated cost 10 thousand dollars), lighting, three pumps of artisanal production and fuel to them, about a hundred meters of hydraulic hoses, and other tools.

Three small-sized truck used by the itinerant diggers to carry equipment, delivered to a shtrafploshchadka.

In an open criminal proceedings under part 2 of article 240 (violation of rules of protection or use of mineral resources) of the Criminal code of Ukraine continued procedural and investigative actions. Militiamen establish the organizers of illegal mining of «Sunny stone».

We will remind, the Ministry of ecology and natural resources in the absence of positive results from the legalization of amber mining does not preclude the introduction of a special regime of activities in the territories under its illegal production.

Earlier, the Minister of internal Affairs Arsen Avakov has proposed to urgently adopt a package of bills that will help combat the unauthorized extraction of amber, in which Ukraine is losing every day not less than one million dollars.

In mid-July the Ministry of ecology and natural resources of Ukraine announced that it withdrew all permits for the extraction of amber, which were issued in 2015. The Ministry said that the license will not be granted for the development of a transparent mechanism of regulation of production and sale of amber.

On 22 July the then Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Valeriy Bosevski instructed the Ministry of environment and the State service of Geology and mineral resources to develop changes in legislation to tackle the problem of illegal mining of amber in the country.

Vice Prime Minister noted the need to prepare complex program of development of the industry of amber extraction, which will contribute to the development of the region through legal and transparent mechanism for the use of subsoil.

According to him, the sector should work as one enterprise which will carry out extraction and sale of amber on the domestic and foreign markets.

Ukraine ranks second in the world reserves of amber, has the highest percentage of gem-quality amber in the deposits.
