In Russia the human rights center «memorial» reported that recognized as political prisoners of citizens of Ukraine Mykola Karpuk and Stanislaw Cliche, which was held behind bars. About it reports Radio Freedom.
Human rights activists demanded immediate and unconditional release of Ukrainians, which in Russia is accused of involvement in hostilities on the side of supporters of independence of Chechnya during the First Chechen war.
According to the statement of «Memorial», during the preliminary investigation the location Karpuk and Cliche and the very fact of criminal prosecution of their carefully concealed, the defendants were deprived of consular assistance and, indeed, the assistance of legal counsel.
According to human rights defenders, formally the interests of the Ukrainians was introduced by the Russian authorities appointed lawyers who, according to the defendants, did not render them any legal assistance; lawyers who are hired by relatives, had an opportunity to join the case only when the investigation is already nearly done to collect evidence.
During the first meeting with the lawyers of both the accused was informed about torture by which they were forced to incriminate himself and testify against other people, the statement reads «Memorial».
According to human rights activists, the indictment in this case are written with disabilities and contains a description of crimes that do not exist. Knowing this, you can with great confidence claim that Karpyuk and Klyh not guilty, and the investigation has no evidence that they ever were in Chechnya, stated in the «Memorial».
On March 21, 2014 the leader of the UNSO Nicholas Karpyuk was seized in Chernigov oblast of the Russian secret police, and from there transported to Russia. The lawyers feared that Karpuk have died, while the Russian side claimed the opposite.
