The radiation background on the industrial site around the destroyed fourth unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant have dropped by half as the result of navigenie Arch at the end of 2016. This was told by Deputy Director for the Shelter Sergey Kondratenko, the press service of the ChNPP site.
«At least until the completion of the new safe confinement and systems in a project mode remains for another year, launching of the Arch has already influenced the ongoing safety of the facility. After the installation of the NSC (new safe confinement – ed.) in the design position of the dose rate around the Arch has fallen by more than two times», — stated in the message.
Installation of the Arch allowed to exclude the ingress of precipitation into the facility that used to be the main factor in erosion and destruction of building structures and migration of radioactive substances. An important factor in terms of increasing security Cover now is the lack of snow on the roof and wind pressure on the walls of the object.
The accident happened on the night of 26 April 1986 on the fourth power unit of station where there was a meltdown of the reactor core with its thermal explosion and subsequent intense emission in the environment of significant amounts of radioactive materials.
The construction of the shelter started in late 2010. Work on the Arch height of 110 m, a width of 257 m and a length of 164 m was brought 10 thousand professionals from 40 countries. For the construction of its efforts, together with Ukraine hosted 28 donor countries, which has collected more than 1 billion 417 million euros.
In November 2017, the NSC will be commissioned, and will begin the dismantling of unstable structures of the Shelter.
