Statement of the European Commission that the gas pipeline «Nord stream – 2» is inappropriate, will not be an obstacle for its construction, said in comments to the edition «GORDON» the President of the Center for global studies «Strategy XXI» Michael Gonchar.
«The construction of «Nord stream – 2» will be delayed, but he can hardly refuse. In the approach of the European Commission is the logic, but all the obstacles on the way to the implementation of the project, in my opinion, overcome. For example, the Germans can squeeze out from «Gazprom» the condition that will give them the territory of the gas Deposit somewhere on the Yamal Peninsula. There, they joined with the Russians will begin to produce gas. And then the part of the gas the Germans will sell to European countries, using just the «Nord stream – 2». That is, there exists a specific German design. Although this project does not meet the criteria of EU Energy Union. To be built «Nord stream – 2» or no differences in the European Union is already there. It’s fun to «Gazprom», – said Gonchar.
In his opinion, the fate of the pipeline is largely dependent on the United States.
«The European Commission is not all opposed the «Nord stream – 2». There are people who stupidly push German interests. That is the triumph we are still early. The European Commission remains on paper only. I think the crucial word here should be said the Americans. The US can slap sanctions on the companies – the contractors of «Gazprom», engaged in the construction of «Nord stream – 2″. Without them, the pipe at great depth, they are not paved. Here it would mean that the project could not succeed. In addition, the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU commits the EU to draw the attention of the Russian Federation on the untapped power in Ukraine. Because the construction of additional pipelines, you can start, if not enough capacity is already available. And our gas transportation system at full capacity and are not involved», – said Gonchar.
The project «Northern stream – 2», headed by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, involves the construction of two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion m3 of gas per year from Russia to Germany under the Baltic sea. The existing gas pipeline «Nord stream» consists of two strings with a length of 1224 km with a capacity of 27.5 billion m3 each, Gazprom began deliveries on this gas pipeline in 2012.
In December 2015, the President of the European Council Donald Tusk said that the project of the second turn of the pipeline «Nord stream» does not correspond to the energy regulations of the EU (Third energy package) and undermining Ukraine’s role as gas transit country.
In March 2016, eight EU countries (Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Estonia and Lithuania) signed a letter to the European Commission to protest against the gas pipeline project. At the same time, its construction support Germany, France, Austria and the Netherlands, writes «Deutsche Welle».
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that the EU has no unanimous agreement regarding the negotiations with Russia on the «Nord stream – 2».
Potter: to Be built the «Nord stream – 2» or not, differences in the European Union is already there. It is a pleasure for Gazprom 09.11.2017
