Portugal has accused Spain in the accumulation of nuclear waste near the border

Portugal has accused Spain in the accumulation of nuclear waste near the border without assessing the impact on the environment. This is stated in the complaint, filed on Monday, January 17, in Brussels, reports The Local.

Portugal has resorted to such a step because of the decision of the Spanish government adopted in late December, to grant permission for the construction of nuclear waste storage at nuclear power plants Almadrabas in Central-Western Spain, approximately 100 km from the border with Portugal.

Lisbon argues that Madrid had violated the EU Directive, which obliges States to «initiate consultations» on the «potential transboundary impact» on the environment.

«The complaint was filed today», — said the representative of the Portuguese Ministry of the environment.

On the same day, about 200 people joined the action of protest in front of the Spanish Consulate in Lisbon.

Spain has seven nuclear reactors that generate about one-fifth of the country’s electricity, while in Portugal there are no operational nuclear power plant.

We will remind, in December 2016, the Lithuanian foreign Ministry handed a note to the Belarusian Ambassador over the incident at the construction site of the NPP.
